=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Mon Feb 28 03:20:59 2000

        *** TequeTRM has joined #interview

<ps_> ok.. so this is gonna be hard.. :)
they want me to do the interivew :)
so erm.. who are you seems like a nice question to start with

        <TequeTRM> as always...

<ps_> well.. comes with the territory :)

        <TequeTRM> well I'm Teque/Trauma from Helsinki, Finland

<ps_> thats cool... so what do you do on this thing we call scene? =)

<TequeTRM> I do music for Trauma and other demogroups that are
                   willing to use my music

<ps_> so you started out with the atari right?

<TequeTRM> well I started my musical experiments on c64 wayyy back...
but yeah I was in an atariscene group Armada whic later
became Aggression.. but I used Amiga back then =)

        <TequeTRM> which
                   damn typos..

<ps_> where did you went from since agression?

<TequeTRM> after Aggression kinda died in 1993/1994 (I was in the finnish
army in 1994-1995) I joined DEE - the music group... My music
appeared from Dee 2 till the last Dee disk Dee Pi
In 1994 I also did a few tracks for Bloodhouse Ltd's Stardust
                   game

<ps_> so what is up with trauma nowdays?

<TequeTRM> Well.. Sol is about to go to Isreal for a job, which He'll
inform all later on. I'm now a full-time sound designer /
composer at Remedy Entertainment and I also do composing for
MadOnion.com. !Cube is working for RTS Networks as a coder.
                   continuing...
Tonic is working for Sonera and Nitro is still in the health-care
work, taking care of elderly people in some place. =)
The rest are pretty much studying or just being lame...

<ps_> so no plans for near future?

<TequeTRM> Well for now it seems like Trauma isn't going to do new demos
in a while after Anterpe-Kiew II is released... Maybe we need
to look for a new coder to biuld the demos.

<ps_> antwerp kiew 2.. you have any dates for that yet? =)

<TequeTRM> Not at this time, but I can say Nitro made a nice soundtrack for
it.. It has a nice speech sample from me. =)
It will be a statement demo as the last one was...

<ps_> humm.. do you plan to get another last place then or this one
              will have good design? =)

<TequeTRM> With the first Anterpe-Kiew demo we wanted it to get disqualified
from the compo. So this one will be even worse. It's a statement
against those wanna-be artistic bullshit demos... WE WANT REAL
DEMOS, NOT THAT SAME ARTYCRAP EVERYONE SEEMS TO MAKE THESE DAYS!!!

        <ps_> define artycrap then :)

<TequeTRM> Artycrap demo is all those demo with blurry stuff all over the
screen and music without a clear rhyhthm. In those those demos
everything is crap, but it's explained it's art. Just like
                   coma/replay/pulse demos...

<ps_> name some of those artycrap demos then :)

        <TequeTRM> ps: wait... I'll check

        <ps_> okidokie

<TequeTRM> pluse's demo from asm98, any demo by replay, almost any demo
                   by coma...

        <TequeTRM> =)

<ps_> so artycrap is lots of visualize pics or flatshaded with text or
              videodemo

        <TequeTRM> artycrap is wanna-be art
                   it's art without reason
                   it's art without purpose

<ps_> why should there be reason to be called art?

<TequeTRM> we just want demos to have some meaning... not just some shit
                   put toghether with music
and I know traumatique is not one of the best examples ;)
I mean anyone can put a some shitty text whopping around
the screen saying stupid things and but some wireframe vectors
with it and call it art...
I could fart into my microphone and call it art
It would be a one of a kind fart

<ps_> ok, so lets change subject.. how did you first started to track and
              what are your main influences/inspirations..

        <TequeTRM> =) hehe...
As I said I started my first muscial experiments in the '80 on c64
but first real tunes I made on Amiga500 in 87/88
I really don't remember the exact year =)

<ps_> well what were your inspirations and how did they evolve?

<TequeTRM> I guess my first inspirations were JM Jarre, Vangelis and Mike
Oldfield. Then came a number of scene composers... The main
inspirations from scene composers were from SLL, Jesper Kyd,
Strobo, Moby, 4Mat, Romeo Knight and all other old school
                   composers

<ps_> well... how did they evolve?

<TequeTRM> well that's kinda hard to say...

        <ps_> well.. try it..
you were there when everyone was doing 4channel, what did you think
about the change to multichannel back when it was still new?

<TequeTRM> Well I did some experiments with octalyzer back then and was
blown away by captains popcorn cover.
I really didn't think much about the future then, I just did
                   music for fun. =)
It was a practice period for me.
In 1993/1994 I relly saw that four channles was not enough.
And in 1995 I began tracking with
                   Scram Trakcer 3 and GUS...

<ps_> gus are nice we like gus

<TequeTRM> I have two gus cards in the studio =)
                   I don't use them...

<ps_> why the hell you needed 2 gus cards?

<TequeTRM> Once of the is on the wall and other is in original!!! Gus Max
                   box =)

<ps_> a gus in a box is not so cool :)

<TequeTRM> but an original box is!!!

<ps_> oki, are you ready for superduper demojournal quiz show contest?

        <TequeTRM> sure, I'm ready for everything =)

<ps_> 1. whats the second biggest city in norway?

<TequeTRM> oslo is the biggest... don't know about thw 2nd biggest

        <ps_> 2. what is your favorite movie/book?

<TequeTRM> my favourite move is bladerunner and favourite book is the
book the movie is based on.. Philip K Dick was a genius
I've never read the book tho

<ps_> 3. what is your favorite color?

        <TequeTRM> black
                   =)

<ps_> 4. whats your favorite computer game?

        <TequeTRM> tetris
                   no question about that =)

<ps_> 5. was scene best on 96 then its now?

        <TequeTRM> u mean that it's now?
                   Well It was better then

<ps_> yeah.. if the demoscene was better then it is nowdays according to
              you...

<TequeTRM> too many quake/unreal players now at partys

<ps_> is that necesarily bad? arent those quakers like... the demosceners
              of tomorow...?

<TequeTRM> not sceneres but computer users of tomorrow... I remember once
incident at asm99 where one quaker player was interviewed about
the forhthcoming pc accelerated demo compo.. he was asked if he
is looking forward the demo compo, and he answered what demo
                   compo... 'nuff said...

<ps_> well.. what do you think of assembly btw?

<TequeTRM> the organizers are doing their best, but they messed things
up big time... in asm '98 I was in the sauna with abyss and
talked with him.. they had planned a separate hall for scerners
only in asm99 which didn't happen... I just hope next year
there'll be a separate hall for scene...

        <ps_> that would be nice..

        <TequeTRM> =)

<ps_> ok so what do you do on real life?

<TequeTRM> well in real I'm doing music & sfx for Remedy entertainment

<ps_> does that pay well? =)

<TequeTRM> enough to support me and my spouse
so it pays well enough =)

<ps_> back when you did music for stardust, did that pay well?

<TequeTRM> no, I did the 4 mods for Stardus during my army time... I
got 500FIM 2 years after that from WizTom/Aggression...

<ps_> did you expect to get any? were you satisfied with the end result?

<TequeTRM> Stardust, I Mean... (I'm the king of typos =)

<ps_> were you involved with super stardust also?

<TequeTRM> nope, nicke did the musci for that I guess

<ps_> the 92-94 change to multichannel was one thing but what do
you think of the current trends (it/ft2/buzz).. have we pushed the
              envelope?

<TequeTRM> well, I've tried buzz and I can say I'm not quite satisfied
with it... with the computers today you're still better off with
                   hardware synhesizers

<ps_> when do you think softsynths will come of age?

<TequeTRM> after 2-5 the situation might be different

<ps_> is there less or more experimenting going on lately in music when
compared to what was going on in the amigascene at around 90?

<TequeTRM> 100 times more experimenting nowadys =) than years ago samplers
were darn expensive... I paid a fortune for my first amiga based
                   sampler "card"...

<ps_> what do you think of the change in intromusic that happened at around
              95?

<TequeTRM> can't say... I got out of the army in february 1995 and
was abit confused about the scene in general =)
in 1996 I was more into the scene stuff...
the rest of 1995 went into learning normal life after army =)

<ps_> of all the people you've come across during your scene career, who
has pushed the envelope the most?

<TequeTRM> from composers Dune / Brothmom States, from gfx artists Visualize,
                   from coders Stone/D
                   Brothom States I mean
                   DAMN THES TYPOS...

        <ps_> brothomStates you mean =)

        <TequeTRM> I HATE MYSELF
                   =)

<TequeTRM> I know Dune's brother btw... He was in the finnihs army with me =)
                   yup =)

<ps_> what exactly did stone/d do?

<TequeTRM> Don't know much about his scene history but he is the lead
coder in remedy these days =)

<ps_> what did the d stand for?

<TequeTRM> also Tsunami/VD is a very cool guy
                   and Juliet/CNCD and Jake
                   I respect them very much
well basically the ghetto broz gang from 1997 =)
the simply most talented people I've ever worked with =)
                   It was a group...
Oh, and I forget to mention Royal/TET
                   The European Technology...

<ps_> what was your involvement with ghetto broz

<TequeTRM> I made the music for the super jave
java demo... (I seem to hit the enter too fast =)
                   http://www.remedy.fi/company/cool_stuff.shtml
there's that Super... the java demo =)
I made the music for ti
                   it

<ps_> do any of the people that were on the scene back in 86 really follow
              the scene anymore?

<TequeTRM> well I guess like 1% of them

        <ps_> are you the 1%?

<TequeTRM> from 1995 sceners there are only 30% left or so

<ps_> a lot of people have started calling some musicians from the
amigascene legends, what's your take on this?

        <TequeTRM> it's changing all the time =)
well, I guess I was first in the scene in 1990/91
I was never in the amiga scene

<ps_> did you actively follow the amigascene?

<TequeTRM> not so actively... I got some demos from my friend. =) I guess
                   I should thank him now...
I got the first soundtracker from him

<ps_> some people namedrop people like ben daglish or matt gray or
jeroen tel / the whole vibrants crew as the people who led them
to start tracking.. what were your inspirations?
              rob hubbard etc

<TequeTRM> my first inspirations for tracker music were sll, mantronix,
uncle tom, captaiain, and the most important was
                   jesper kyd/silents
and also moby & audiomonster & laxity were at some level
                   inspiration for me

<ps_> were you aware that kyd has a page on scene.org?

        <TequeTRM> I know..

<ps_> have you been checking out what necros has put out at
              alphaconspiracy.com?

<TequeTRM> nope, but I know that he is a damn good composer =)

<ps_> what was your reaction to the whole jay newingham mess?

<TequeTRM> I laughed at the jay thingie
It's one of these "only in America" things..

<ps_> do you visit parties frequently or have you ever?

<TequeTRM> No, I don't visit parties so frequently... I'll attend Assembly
parties at least.. All others are extra..

<ps_> you nitro & cube have been putting out a lot of musicdisks on the dee
label, did you ever get feedback for any of it? what about the
              reaction to the interface?

<TequeTRM> I've only got some positive feeback from the dee disks my tunes
                   appeared
I've never liked the interface tho...
All the same to me what the people think about the interface,
it's quite obsolete now as it's not windows combatible =)

<ps_> force sol to make a win32 one

<TequeTRM> no, he's leveaing for Isreal soon =)

<ps_> what do you think of the whole win32 movement?

<TequeTRM> ModPlug player is good enough windows player =)

<ps_> win32demos and diskmags that is

<TequeTRM> I haven't really checked the recent diskmags

<ps_> oh well... you didnt miss much :)

        <TequeTRM> but for win32 demos, I think it's a huge improvement
no more fiddling arounf obsolete dos stuff
I know windwos has a lot of bugs in it, but so has every software

<ps_> oh well... we are out of questions it seems :)
you have an homepage and email for the fans?

        <TequeTRM> =)
                   http://www.saunalahti.fi/~nl04185/
                   that's my humble homepage =)
I will just say Bill Gates sure knows how to do the marketing
We should all learn about that

<ps_> hehe, okidokie... well thank you for your time and stuff :)

<TequeTRM> no prob... hope you get sumthin out of it =)
and well I was drunk all the time =)
as if it was some excuse... hahahahaa

        <ps_> we notice

<TequeTRM> well I'm impressed that someone actually wanted interview me =)
                   so thank you! =)

=====! demo !==================================================================

        sabena safety on board demo

You can check this at any sabena flight (on the newer planes, the
old ones still have the stewardesses waving around back and forth...
It starts with a big sound check like on movie theaters with some
planes flying over planet earth and ending on a sabena logo.
Then come the nifty 3d animations.. unrealistic 3d humans and
stewardesses moving around on this double sized plane as the one we
are on... Then come the typical no mobile phones, no discmans, no
laptops can be used on board... they were too lazy to put some 3d x's
around it so its just moving 3d objects (which the discmans and
tennis shoes at dialogos99 were alot more realistic) and a very bad
        2d red cross over it.
You get an animation where some supposedly oxygen masks fall on top
of a semi humanoid girl.. then the evacuaion procedures... and
we are ready to take off flight.. we hope you have a pleasant flight.
                                                                           ps

Another awesome finn idm experimental track. Very good co-op
for a great revolving tune. Really hard to say anything objective
about this track 'cause it's simply just so great to listen.
Just try to find out who did what part.
