Tips for using the Search Engine

Type the word you want to search for in the text field. Upper or lower case is not important. Then click on the "Search" button to start the search. The results will be presented as a list of documents you can choose from by clicking on a document title.

Attention: Please avoid search terms containing special characters, because they might not be supported by the search engine (for example, do not search for "OS/2", but for "Warp").

You can also search for multiple words by separating each word with a space. Two search methods are available for multiple words, which can be selected with the radio buttons under the text field:

  • The Literal text (free text) search returns all pages that contain at least one of the words you entered. The pages containing most of your search terms will be listed first. Additionally, the search engine will return all documents that contain variations of the words you entered (example: If you entered manage, pages containing "management" will also be returned).

  • The Boolean search allows to to specify your search more exactly by using the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT as well as the wildcard characters * and ?. Examples:
windows AND mpeg will return all pages containing both "Windows" and "MPEG".

windows OR mpeg will return all pages containing at least one of the words "Windows" and "MPEG".

windows NOT mpeg will return all pages containing "Windows", but not "MPEG".

The wildcard character ? represents any single character. For example, ??.?TQV will return pages containing "28.8TQV" as well as pages containing "33.6TQV".

The wildcard character * represents any part of a word. For example, video* will return all pages containing aword that begins with "video...".

All these operators can also be combined. Search terms consisting of several words can be entered by enclosing them in quotation marks. Example:

"windows nt" AND multi* NOT games will return all pages containing "Windows NT" and at least one word beginning with "multi...", but not the word "games".
