Line-on-Demand
It is important to keep an eye on the costs incurred by dial-up connections for the interconnection of LANs, as these are subject to connect charges based on their duration. Charges will continue to be incurred if a user forgets to shut down the connection. The LANCOM monitors connections and automatically shuts them down if no data is sent within a previously defined period of time. The second B channel can automatically be used to speed up the transfer of very large volumes of data.

Charge Monitoring
This monitor helps prevent excessive connect charges. A certain number of charge units can be allocated per day, week or month. Once these units are used up, the connection is terminated and cannot be re-established until a new ration of charge units has been allocated.

Short-Hold Mode
The short-hold mode ends a connection automatically after a given period of time if the line is no longer needed and re-establishes it as required.

Data Compression
Data compression is a further method for the reduction of connect charges. The size of data packets can be reduced considerably using modern compression techniques. This reduces the transfer time required for individual packets and in turn reduces the connect charges.

Filtering
The filtering of data packets not only serves as a security mechanism, but also prevents the unnecessary establishment of connections.

Spoofing
Suppose your company network is connected to that of the branch office via the ISDN router. Both networks exchange information at regular intervals - even if no useful data is being transferred. The continually recurring establishment of the connection to check for the presence of the client at the opposite end results in substantial connect charges over time.
The spoofing function ensures that charges are only incurred as a result of the transfer of useful data. In other words, the router does not actually establish a physical connection, but simulates the router at the opposite end and responds to the query locally. Spoofing is thus a valuable tool for the reduction of connection charges.

Leased-line Connections
This permanent type of connection may be economical if connections are established frequently. We recommend studying this option carefully. A leased line between two offices may result in substantial savings if data is being transferred continuously.
