Aachen, April 1999 - Effective immediately, ELSA is shipping the LANCOM Office routers with a new release of the firmware: release 1.30. The updated firmware offers powerful features and extensive upgrades to the functionality of the ELSA office routers. The most important new features are optimized remote configuration, ELSA LANmonitor to display system status and least-cost routing (LCR).
The remote configuration feature makes it remarkably simple to get new LANCOM routers up and running. Just make a connection via ISDN directly to the configuration system. The LANCOM can then be configured remotely. The benefit: time-consuming on-site configuration of the individual stations is no longer necessary, since the technician no longer has to be on the spot.
The ELSA LANmonitor is an extremely user-friendly tool for network communication. It provides information at any time on the current operating status of the LANCOM router. For example, it displays the condition of the ISDN channels, the rate at which data are being transmitted across the connection and whether there are transmission errors. In addition, messages can be captured on a PC and stored on the hard disk for logging purposes, for example in order to backtrack faults.
Least-cost routing is becoming more and more important with the multitude of telecommunications companies, each of which has its own rates structure. Once just a few items have been entered, the least-cost routing function in the LANCOM allows the user to make significant savings on telephone charges, because the least-cost router permits any of the phone companies to be selected, using the call-by-call or dial-around feature. This function can be used in every operating mode of the LANCOM router (ISDN router, LANCAPI and as a PBX system), and can be individually selected for each of them.
The least-cost routing function is integrated into all ELSA LANCOM Office routers, effective immediately. As usual, a firmware update is available for upgrading currently installed systems. The firmware can be downloaded from the Internet at www.elsa.com.
