How to determine the correct amount of memory of my upgraded GLoria graphics board?
Using Windows NT, enter the dialog 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel' -> 'Display' -> 'Settings' -> 'Display Type':

The point of interest is the 'Adapter-String': it should read as follows: "ELSA GLoria-L 8 / 16" for an upgraded ELSA GLoria-L, like it should for any ELSA GLoria-L/MX! For GLoria-XL and -XXL you should read 16/24 or 16/40 for the upgraded version.

does show detailed information about the graphics adapter when started with the command "brdinfo.exe -detail", but as it only runs under DOS, it does not see all of the memory! Only when using Windows NT there is full 48 bit access to the onboard EDO-RAM of ELSA GLoria-XL und -XXL. Only under Windows NT you can see the full amount of memory.
If you access only 32 bit of this onboard memory, as it happens under Windows 9x and DOS, you'll only see 2/3 of the onboard memory, that is only 16 MB of the onboard 24 MB:

This gets even more complicated when exploring an upgraded 40 MB board: the 24 MB onboard are 48 bit, but are accessed only 32 bit -> you'll see only those 16 MB. In addition you'll see the complete 16 MB of the upgrade module, because this is 32 bit at all. This summes up to 16 + 16 MB = 32 MB overall:
