Cleaning up the Windows NT 4.0 Registry and uninstallation of the old graphics driver

To guarantee a clean, new installation of the graphics driver for Windows NT 4.0, we recommend to clean up the registry. Before you start with the cleaning, you have to reinstall the standart VGA driver and thereby remove the old graphics driver.

Then uninstall all ELSA tools (e.g.: ELSA GLoria Settings, ELSA MAXtreme ...) at the 'Properties of Software'. To get there, follow his path: 'Start\Settings\System\Software'.
Now open the registry editor by typing and starting 'regedit' in the window, that pops up if you press 'Start\Run'.
In the screenshot below you can see all the necessary changes, in this case it is an ELSA GLoria Synergy. At the bottom of the window in the status line, you'll see the path were you can find the settings.



Delete the whole path \EGLPM.
The name of the key e.g. ...\EGLPM is the name of the SYS-file in the installation directory i386 of the driver you are using, so on the WINNERware-CD C-99 this would be Gloria\Synergy\Winnt40\i386\i386\ and there you will find the file named eglpm.sy_. For older ELSA drivers, the key was called 'WINNER'.
If you used a graphics board of any other vendor and you do not use it anymore, you should look for similar folder of this vendor and delete them too.

Attention!
You can destroy your Windows NT installation by editing the registry, so please be very careful and - of course - make a backup of the existing registry and of the complete system.
Please make sure to check if it really is a key of a product you want to remove. You can check whether you have the right entry by clicking on the subkey \Device0 and verifying the 'Data' of: 'BoardName'.





If you still find some entries in the subkey \Elsa after you uninstalled all tools, delete them all.



Also delete all entries in the subkey \Run, which contain 'ELSA'.

Hereafter you can close the registry editor and change with the Windows Explorer in your NT root folder. There in the subfolder \inf\ you may find some ELSA-files which you should delete now:
e.g.: ELSA.INF, WINMAN.INF, VIDEOIO.INF, DESKTOOL.INF, DXCTRL.INF, GLSET.INF, WINMSUIT.INF
These are exactly the file that you'll find in your installation directories and subdirectories. So you can verify which files you have to remove.
Additionally you should delete the following files in your Windows NT subdirectory SYSTEM32:
MonCTRL.cpl, MonCTdeu.dll, MonCTeng.dll and 24H96.TIM; furthermore WinCT*.* for very old drivers.

To complete, restart your computer and (re)install the new drivers for the graphics board you have in use.
