Installation of miroSOUND sound cards under Linux
             =================================================

        The sound cards of the miroSOUND series basically use two different types 
        of Opti sound-chipsets.	These are:

	OPTI 82C929 - used on FM10, PCM10, PCM1pro,
		      PCM12 (old version)

	OPTI 82C924 - used on PCM12 (new version), PCM20 Radio

	Difference between PCM12 old and new version:
	PCM12 old version has 4 CDROM-interfaces: IDE, SONY, MITSUMI
	and PANASONIC.
	PCM12 new version has only 1 (IDE) CDROM-interface

	The sound cards PCM1 pro, PCM12 and PCM20 Radio have an extremely 
	noise reducing 7-channel stereo mixer, that is controlled via a
	specific hardware interface.
  
	Since Kernel version 1.3.xx Linux sound drivers have already been 
	supporting OPTI 82C929 (named MAD16).

	Since Kernel version 2.0.xx there has also been support for the
	7-channel stereo mixer so that miroSOUND cards with OPTI 82C929
	will directly be supported by Linux.

	The OPTI 82C924-chipset is compatible to OPTI 82C929 and in addition 
	to the latter one offers "Plug & Play" support.
	As detection and activating of this component is different from 
	OPTI 82C929 an additional patch is needed to use it with the actual
	LINUX Kernel 2.0.xx:
	therefore the file mad16.c in /usr/linux/drivers/sound has to be 
	exchanged with file mad16c from a newer, so-called "Hacker-Kernel", 
	e.g. Kernel Vers. 2.1.68. After exchanging a recompilation has 
	to be done.
	Kernel Versions 2.1.xx already offer OPTI 82C924 support in 
	non-PNP mode which is needed to run PCM12 new Version and PCM20 Radio
	under LINUX.
	
	Wavetable sound of the OPL4 in MIDI operation mode under LINUX is 
	supported via MPU401 General MIDI emulation. PCM12 and PCM20 Radio 
	offer MPU401 compatibility.
	With other cards of the miroSOUND series either an external MIDI 
	source can be connected to the MIDI interface or with PCM10 and FM10
	a Waveblaster-compatible add-on board (e.g. YAMAHA XG50) can be mounted
	to get MIDI support.
