Background There are time servers in the internet. The internal clocks of these time servers are directly or indirectly controled by atomic clocks in the internet. They transmit their time setting to other computers by a protocol. But it is not that easy. We must not forget that the information signal from the server can only be transmitted to the client in a finite time. Additionally the duration of the transmission is not always alike because the speed of the internet will never be alike. The exactness of the transmitted time depends very much on the time server which is used. It can be exact up to microseconds. For desktop computers an exactness to a tenth of a second is sufficient. That's why the most exact time servers (Stratum-1-Server) are protected by passwords in order not to allow private persons to overcharge them by unnecessary requests. Time servers which are not directly connected to an atomic clock or to an GPS signal and which receive their time from a stratum-1-server (so called Stratum-2-servers) are not protected by passwords and can be used as time servers by everybody.
